The World Bank Group’s global partnership program Connect4Climate aims to accelerate, amplify, expand and consolidate climate action to help achieve a sustainable future. Poised at the nexus of climate change, poverty and sustainability, Connect4Climate fills a crucial niche in climate advocacy, knowledge sharing and global engagement.

By championing #Fashion4Climate online, Connect4Climate promotes the idea that the industry can become a leader in decarbonizing and creating a sustainable future—that Fashion can be an ally and not an enemy in the push for a greener planet.

How does Connect4Climate contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry?

The Fashion4Climate initiative works with partners to drive climate consciousness and sustainability in the fashion sector. With an emphasis on creative communications, Fashion4Climate engages consumer audiences at an emotional level and celebrates innovation and leadership across the industry.  Whether providing opportunities for pioneering young designers at Milan Design Week, highlighting the social and environmental impacts of the fashion industry through virtual reality, or spreading the message of sustainable fashion with Climate Action Bracelets by the renowned Cruciani, Fashion4Climate has always staunchly supported the fashion industry’s efforts to transition from harmful practices to helpful ones and to do its parts toward the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

X-Ray Fashion

To lay bare the adverse impacts of a 2.5 trillion-dollar industry and drive home the need for sustainable practices, Connect4Climate partnered with Vulcan Productions and carbon-neutral company Alcantara to produce the X-Ray Fashion Virtual Reality (VR) Experience, which has become emblematic of Fashion4Climate as a whole and serves to catalyze a global discussion.

Created by the Danish immersive spatial design company MANND, and directed by the renowned fashion photographer and filmmaker Francesco Carrozzini, this immersive VR experience premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival and from there traveled the world, capturing the attention of industry leaders, influencers, political leaders and consumers at a range of high-profile venues.

Francesco Carrozzini states, “I was immediately attracted to this project because it held the potential for experimentation with strong political messages and virtual reality. This has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my professional life, and I hope the film will educate the world about some of the harsh realities of the fashion industry.”

X-Ray Fashion Upcycled

X-Ray Fashion underwent an upgrade in 2024. “X-Ray Fashion Upcycled” integrated the latest VR technologies, updated the documentary’s content to ensure alignment with recent sustainable fashion research, and enhanced audience interaction. The upgraded VR experience includes new narration from Francesco Carrozzini, which strengthens the storytelling to better illuminate the dark story of garment production in the fast fashion industry. This Upcycled version, made its premiere at Planet Week, on the sidelines of the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment, and then featured at the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair (CIFF) during Copenhagen Fashion Week.

As part of the updated version, a playbook accompanies the experience. Ideal for teachers to use in the classroom, the document is also useful to any reader since it contains plenty of knowledge, hard facts, educational exercises, and suggestions as to how they can be applied to encourage the fashion industry to be more sustainable, responsible, transparent, and inclusive.
